What Maker Verified is and what certification represents.
What is Maker Verified?
Maker Verified is an independent standards organization that reviews whether an artist or maker complies with the Maker Verified Standard for Human Creative Authorship.
What does Maker Verified certify?
Maker Verified certifies that an artist or maker satisfied the published standard at the time of review. Certification addresses meaningful human creative authorship and truthful representation of the creative process.
Is certification attached to the creator or to an individual work?
Certification applies to the approved artist or maker and the disclosed creative process. It does not separately certify, authenticate, inspect, approve or guarantee each artwork, product, edition or collection.
Does certification evaluate artistic quality, originality or market value?
No. Maker Verified evaluates compliance with the published authorship standard. It does not judge artistic quality, taste, originality, price, market value or investment potential.
Is Maker Verified a government agency or licensing authority?
No. Maker Verified is a privately administered certification program. Certification is not government approval, professional licensure, accreditation, authentication, appraisal, copyright determination or product-safety testing.
APPLICATION & REVIEW

Applicants describe what they make, how they make it and the role they personally play in the creative process.
Who can apply?
Artists, makers, designers, craftspeople, photographers and other creators whose work is primarily the result of their own creative authorship may apply.
Is there a cost to submit an application?
There is no cost to submit an application. Any certification, renewal or other fee will be clearly disclosed before an applicant is asked to proceed or incurs the fee.
What happens after I submit my application?
Maker Verified reviews the application and signed documents, then the applicant schedules a brief verification interview. Additional information may be requested when the initial record is incomplete or needs clarification.
Is the interview required?
Yes. Every applicant completes a short 10 to 15 minute interview with the Maker Verified team. The conversation gives the applicant an opportunity to explain their work and creative process in their own words.
What should I be prepared to discuss during the interview?
Be prepared to discuss what you make, how ideas develop, the tools and materials you use, the steps you personally perform, any assistants or outside services involved and any technology relevant to the creative process.
Will I be asked to provide supporting information?
Possibly. Supporting information varies by creative discipline and the process described. Maker Verified may request reasonable materials such as sketches, progress photographs, notes, patterns, prototypes, unfinished work, design files, tools, workspace images or other records connected to the process.
Will my private application evidence be published?
No private application evidence is published without separate permission. Approved public profile information and current certification status may appear in the Maker Verified Registry.
Does submitting an application guarantee approval?
No. Submission begins the review process but does not guarantee approval or authorize use of the Maker Verified name or Mark. A decision is based on the standard, application, signed documents, interview and any reasonable supporting information requested during review.
AI, TOOLS & CREATIVE PROCESS
The standard focuses on authorship, not the absence of technology.
Human-made does not mean made without tools, software, machinery, employees or modern production methods. The central question is where meaningful creative authorship originates.
Does Maker Verified prohibit all use of artificial intelligence?
No. The standard evaluates the conception, design, development and meaningful creative creation of the work itself. Administrative uses of AI or software that do not contribute creative content to the work are outside the scope of review.
What kinds of technology use are generally outside the standard?
Examples include marketing, bookkeeping, scheduling, website management, customer communication, inventory management, research assistance, spelling or grammar correction and general productivity software, provided those uses do not generate or materially direct the creative work.
Can I use ordinary tools, machinery or digital fabrication?
Yes. Human-made does not mean made without tools, electricity, machinery or software. Tools may support the work when the artist remains responsible for the authorship, judgment, operation, quality control, transformation and finishing that determine the work’s identity.
Can assistants, collaborators or outside specialists be involved?
They may be involved when their roles are accurately disclosed and do not replace the applicant’s core authorship. The application and interview should clearly describe employees, assistants, collaborators, contractors, outside services and any other people involved in meaningful production.
What if I am unsure whether a tool or software feature affects eligibility?
Disclose it in the application or discuss it during the interview. Maker Verified can evaluate the use in the context of the complete creative process rather than relying only on the name of a tool or feature.
What if my creative process changes after certification?
Certified artists and makers must promptly notify Maker Verified when a material change could affect eligibility. Relevant changes may include creative methods, AI use, staffing, outsourcing, manufacturing, digital fabrication, brand identity or other facts connected to the certified process.
STATUS, RENEWAL & THE MARK
Certification is active, public and accountable.
Approved creators receive a certification status buyers can check and a limited right to use approved Maker Verified materials while certification remains active.
How long does certification last?
Unless the written certification decision or public registry states a different term, certification is valid for twelve months. Certification is not permanent and must be renewed to remain active.
What may be required for renewal?
Renewal may require an updated declaration, disclosure of process changes, a new interview, additional supporting information, acceptance of the current standard and payment of any then-current renewal fee.
Can certification be suspended or revoked?
Yes. Certification may be suspended or revoked when a creator knowingly provides false or misleading information, no longer complies with the standard, misuses the Mark, fails to disclose a material change or refuses to cooperate with a reasonable review or investigation.
When may a certified creator use the Maker Verified Mark?
The approved Mark may be used only while certification remains active and only in accordance with the current badge and trademark usage requirements. Certification materials may not be transferred to another artist, maker, company, brand or identity.
Can certified creators change the color or proportions of the Mark?
Certified creators receive approved mark files and usage guidance. The Mark should be displayed only in authorized color treatments, proportions and contexts so it remains consistent and recognizable.
How do buyers verify certification?
Buyers may search the public Maker Verified Registry to confirm the creator’s current certification status, certification number, effective date and expiration date when those records are available.
How can I report a concern or possible misuse of the Mark?
Concerns about suspected prohibited AI use, false process claims, badge misuse, copied certification materials or other material violations may be submitted through the official Maker Verified contact process for review.
